6 AM. A woodpecker on the metal gutter.
Every burst on the gutter gets an answer: Pi slides his slider across the stops, and every stop plays a note. The bird tilts its head and tries again, faster. Then the neighbors' woodpeckers show up on the lamp post, the mailbox and the ladder, and the whole street is a drum line. Pi is wiped out on the windowsill. One woodpecker lands next to him, pecks the top of his head, and gets a note. Then another.
